2012Presumptions on Gender
I never cease to wonder why people care what’s in your pants…
I mean, if I am out there as a woman, why would anyone make an issue out of my physical gender?
I think there is a basic shift that takes place for many people depending on whether they are dealing with a man or a woman.
There are expectations and prejudgments that go along with each, just as there are with older or younger, well-groomed or sloppy and so on.
But none is so basic as gender.
Still, it shouldn’t be a problem since my reactions and interactions will essentially be the same as any other woman.
Ah, but I know the “secret handshake” on the men’s side. Maybe, I’ll even let my “sisters” in on it… How will men be able to maintain the upper hand then?
Consider also how difficult it gets to discriminate against women when we can’t even tell which really are women? Maybe that worker that we see as too pretty to be smart is actually a man? Maybe that incompetent worker that we keep around because we like the beauty and charm she brings to our office is just a guy…
And, what about affirmative action programs, like making the physical standards lower for women to allow them to join, say, a police force or fire department? T-girls would have an unfair advantage there…
Clearly, our whole society would fall apart if we just accept people who present as women as women.

It is not jut what is in your pants. It seems that we humans have a need to categorize people by race by gender by nationality even place of birth. Anyone who steps outside the boxes can seriously upset some peoples world.
